The Sona Streaming Player connects to the automation server over Ethernet, brings Spotify Connect, AirPlay and DLNA music into the building's scenes, and takes up three modules in the electrical panel: an audio player.

What it does

In most buildings, music services and the music libraries on the network stay outside the automation; lights and blinds are run from one system, music from another app. This player joins the two: it plays from Spotify Connect, AirPlay, DLNA/UPnP and file servers, and maps its audio controls to KNX group addresses. Changing the radio station, lowering the volume or playing a sound notification is triggered from a KNX push-button, a panel or a scene; music, lighting and blinds sit in the same scene.

How it connects

The player sits on the DIN rail in the panel and takes up three modules; it is powered from 24 V DC. It joins the network over Ethernet and talks to the automation server over KNXnet/IP or BACnet/IP. Audio leaves through two line-out pairs (RCA or clamp) to external amplifiers; four 24 V trigger outputs switch the amplifier zones on and off.

What it plays from

Spotify Connect (Premium account), AirPlay, DLNA/UPnP servers and files reached over FTP, NFS or HTTP. Music can be loaded onto the 16 GB built-in storage; the local library keeps playing if the internet drops. Lossless ALAC and FLAC are supported up to 24-bit / 96 kHz.

Which servers it works with

The player works with both the Sona Home and the Sona BMS automation server; the connection is over Ethernet and is set up the same way on both.

Other accessories

Wireless Zigbee devices join the system through the Sona Zigbee Gateway, which connects to the server's RS-232 port.

Frequently asked questions

Is a separate app needed for Spotify?

No. The player carries Spotify Connect itself; it is chosen as the playback device from the Spotify app on the phone. A Spotify Premium account is required.

Is an amplifier included?

No. The player outputs line-level audio; the two line-out pairs connect to external amplifiers. The four trigger outputs switch the amplifiers on and off.

How many zones does it feed?

The player provides one stereo source; with its four trigger outputs, four amplifier zones are switched on and off individually. For different music in different rooms, a separate player is installed per room.

Does it work without an automation server?

Yes: it has its own web interface and is used directly with AirPlay or Spotify Connect. Control from KNX push-buttons and taking part in scenes require a Sona Home or Sona BMS.

Used together with a Sona Home or Sona BMS automation server, the player lets audio, lighting and blinds be run from the same scene.
